Pérdida asegurada por terremoto en Haití estimada en USD 250 millones por KCC
La modeladora de riesgo de catástrofes Karen Clark & Company (KCC) ha estimado que las pérdidas aseguradas del terremoto M7.2 que afectó a Haití rondarán los USD 250 millones. Sin embargo, con pérdidas asegurables o económicas estimadas en alrededor de USD 1.700, solo alrededor del 14,7% del costo total del terremoto será cubierto por el seguro, dice KCC, destacando el alcance de la brecha de protección en el país.
El terremoto causó daños generalizados y víctimas después de su ruptura el 14 de agosto en la península suroeste de Haití, 78 millas al oeste de la capital, Puerto Príncipe. Los analistas señalan que los edificios en esta región eran altamente vulnerables a los fuertes movimientos del suelo cerca de la ruptura, con numerosos hoteles e iglesias destruidas en la costa suroeste, incluso en Les Cayes, un importante puerto marítimo. Al noroeste, el techo de una catedral y muchos otros edificios se derrumbaron en Jeremie, una comuna costera que sufrió grandes daños, y se sintieron algunos temblores en Puerto Príncipe, aunque no se han reportado daños significativos allí.
Decenas de miles de personas quedaron sin hogar por el terremoto, y las cifras actuales dejan las muertes en 1.419 y los heridos en 6.900, aunque muchas personas en las áreas afectadas siguen desaparecidas. El trabajo de rescate también se ha visto obstaculizado por las fuertes lluvias de la tormenta tropical Grace, que se está arrastrando sobre la isla hoy y podría desencadenar deslizamientos de tierra, ya que trae un estimado de 25 cm de lluvia a algunas regiones. Y la catástrofe no podría llegar en peor momento para Haití, que sigue en crisis tras el asesinato de su presidente el mes pasado.
KCC señala que la isla La Española, que incluye Haití y República Dominicana, no es ajena a los terremotos devastadores, ya que ha experimentado doce terremotos M6.0 y mayores y cuatro M7.0 y mayores desde 1900. El más mortífero fue el terremoto de 2010 que mató a más de 200.000 personas y causó grandes daños a la infraestructura y la economía del país.

Insured Haiti quake loss estimated at $250mn by KCC
Catastrophe risk modeller Karen Clark & Company (KCC) has estimated that insured losses from the M7.2 earthquake that hit Haiti will be around $250 million. However, with insurable, or economic, losses estimated at around $1.7 billion, only around 14.7% of the overall cost of the quake will be covered by insurance, KCC says, highlighting the extent of the protection gap in the country.
The quake caused widespread damage and casualties after rupturing on August 14th on Haiti’s southwest peninsula 78 miles west of the capital city, Port-au-Prince. Analysts note that buildings in this region were highly vulnerable to the strong ground motions near the rupture, with numerous hotels and churches destroyed on the southwestern coast, including in Les Cayes, a major seaport. To the northwest, the roof of a cathedral and many other buildings collapsed in Jeremie, a coastal commune which sustained extensive damage, and some shaking was felt in Port-au-Prince, although no significant damage has been reported there.
Tens of thousands of people were left homeless by the quake, and current figures put deaths at 1,419 and injuries at 6,900, although many people in the affected areas still remain missing. Rescue work has also been hampered by heavy rains from Tropical Storm Grace, which is tracking over the island today and could trigger landslides as it brings an estimated 25cm of rain to some regions. And the disaster could not come at a worse time for Haiti, which is still in turmoil following the assassination of its president last month.
KCC notes that the island of Hispaniola, which includes Haiti and Dominican Republic, is no stranger to devastating quakes, having experienced twelve M6.0 and larger and four M7.0 and larger earthquakes since 1900. The deadliest was the 2010 earthquake which killed more than 200,000 people and caused extensive damage to the country’s infrastructure and economy.
