IRB Brasil RE nombra a Raphael Carvalho como director general
La reaseguradora brasileña IRB Brasil Re ha anunciado el nombramiento de Raphael Afonso Godinho de Carvalho como su nuevo CEO, a partir del 1 de octubre de 2021. Carvalho reemplaza a Wilson Toneto, quien ha ocupado el cargo de director general interino desde marzo de 2021 y quien permanecerá como Director Técnico y de Operaciones. La reaseguradora dice que el nombramiento de su nuevo CEO es la siguiente fase en su proceso de reestructuración y transformación.
IRB Brasil Re anunció en enero que había designado una firma consultora de gestión empresarial global para ayudar en una revisión estratégica, diseñada para fortalecer la transformación estratégica, operativa y financiera de la reaseguradora. Unos meses más tarde, el regulador brasileño de seguros, SUSEP, finalizó su inspección especial de un año de IRB Brasil Re, que comenzó en medio de preocupaciones de que la reaseguradora carecía de reservas suficientes, luego de que la empresa restableciera las ganancias y notara problemas contables.
El nuevo consejero delegado Carvalho asumió el cargo a principios de octubre con un mandato unificado con el resto de miembros de la Dirección General Estatutaria de la firma hasta el 2 de julio de 2023. “La elección del señor Raphael de Carvalho estuvo precedida por un proceso de selección amplio, profundo y detallado, con la asistencia de una reconocida empresa consultora especializada en el mercado. El Sr. Raphael de Carvalho tiene una gran experiencia en el mercado financiero y asegurador, con una trayectoria de más de 30 años en grandes instituciones”, explica la empresa.
Carvalho se une a IRB Brasil Re procedente de la aseguradora MetLife, donde durante los últimos seis años y medio se desempeñó como director general de la empresa en Brasil y Colombia. Al principio de su carrera, trabajó como Country Manager de Visa para América Latina y el Caribe y socio principal en la Consultoría de Práctica de Seguros de Accenture. “La Compañía agradece al Sr. Wilson Toneto su dedicación durante el período en el que ocupó el cargo de Director General Interino y aprovecha esta oportunidad para dar la bienvenida al nuevo Director General de IRB Brasil RE”, dice la firma.

IRB Brasil RE names Raphael Carvalho as CEO
Brazilian reinsurer IRB Brasil Re has announced the appointment of Raphael Afonso Godinho de Carvalho as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective October 1st, 2021. Carvalho takes over from Wilson Toneto, who has held the CEO role in the interim since March 2021 and who will remain as Chief Technical and Operations Officer. The reinsurer says that the appointment of its new CEO is the next phase in its restructuring and transformation process.
IRB Brasil Re announced back in January that it had appointed a global business management consulting firm to assist in a strategic review, designed to strengthen the reinsurer’s strategic, operational, and financial transformation. Some months later, Brazil’s insurance regulator, SUSEP, ended its year-long special inspection of IRB Brasil Re, which commenced amid concerns the reinsurer lacked sufficient reserves, after the company reinstated earnings and noted accounting issues.
New CEO Carvalho took office from the start of October with a term unified with the other members of the firm’s Statutory Executive Officers until July 2nd, 2023. “The election of Mr. Raphael de Carvalho was preceded by a broad, deep and detailed selection process, with the assistance of a renowned specialized consulting company in the market. Mr. Raphael de Carvalho has large experience in the financial and insurance markets, with a career of over 30 years in large institutions,” explains the company.
Carvalho joins IRB Brasil Re from insurer MetLife, where for the past six and a half years, he served as CEO of the company in Brazil and Colombia. Earlier in his career, he worked as Visa’s Country Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean and lead partner at Accenture’s Insurance Practice Consultancy. “The Company thanks Mr. Wilson Toneto for his dedication throughout the period in which he held the position of Interim Chief Executive Officer and takes this opportunity to welcome the new Chief Executive Officer of IRB Brasil RE,” says the firm.
